Modern LED lights use up to 75 percent less energy than the incandescent kind, and they’re surprisingly durable, with an estimated life of up to 40 years, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
“Buying and operating incandescent C-9 lights for 10 holiday seasons would cost an estimated $122.19 compared to just $17.99 for a string of LED C-9 lights,” said Niall McCarthy, writing for Statista, a statistics website. Widespread LED use in the United States could save $30 billion by 2027 and electricity equivalent to 44 large power plants, the Energy Department says.
