Lockheed Martin Missiles & Fire Control announced last week that it had received a $79.4 million contract from the U.S. Department of Defense to develop a new version of a missile manufactured primarily at the company’s Camden facility.
The Camden plant employs 600 workers and has grown steadily over the past several years, according to Craig Vanbebber, a spokesman for Lockheed Martin.
"We anticipate a stable workforce there for the foreseeable future," Vanbebber said. The contract is for a variant of the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System. The plant also manufactures Patriot Advanced Capability-3 missiles and High-Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems.
The GMLRS development program will run 36 months and will focus on system performance, warhead qualification and producibility.
"We are eager to move forward with the Alternative Warhead Program and provide soldiers and marines with a precision-engagement capability that means their evolving requirements," Scott Arnold, vice president of precision fires for the company’s Missiles & Fire Control business, said in a release. "GMLRS has been a trusted weapon of choice in current combat operations in Afghanistan, and continues to exceed operational-readiness requirements."
