Lyon College on Tuesday announced that it’s partnering with the city of Cabot to provide real-world experience to students at its School of Veterinary Medicine in Little Rock.
The two entities signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on community outreach, educational programming, and animal care and health management at Cabot Animal Support Services locations.
“Lyon College has always been dedicated to providing our students with hands-on experiences that extend beyond the classroom,” Melissa Taverner, president of Lyon College, said in a news release. “This collaboration will not only enhance the education of our veterinary students but will also positively impact the well-being of animals and residents in Cabot.”
The private liberal arts college in Batesville received approval from the Higher Learning Commission in November to offer a veterinary medicine degree. The college is now pursuing accreditation with the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Pending approval, the veterinary college could open at the Heifer International campus in downtown Little Rock as early as 2025.
“This partnership represents a significant milestone in veterinary education in the state of Arkansas,” Dr. Eleanor Green, founding dean of the veterinary college, said in a statement. “By working alongside the City of Cabot Animal Support Services, our students will gain invaluable practical knowledge, contribute to the local community’s welfare, and emerge as compassionate and skilled veterinarians.”
The veterinary college is one of two in development in Arkansas. Arkansas State University recently received state approval to establish its own veterinary college and is aiming to hold inaugural classes in 2025.
