New Maumelle Center Lets Seniors Live and Age Well (Tourism | Honorable Mention)

2 min read

The Maumelle Senior Services Department has a brand new home, complete with nearby lake views and a new cafe.

The Maumelle Center on the Lake is a $4.6 million facility that opened to the public in March 2017. It’s located in the central part of Maumelle, within walking distance to Lake Willastein.

The convenient location allows many Maumelle residents to use the walking trails around the city that lead to the center.

The building was financed with a bond issue that included two other projects approved by Maumelle voters in 2015, completion of softball field and the renovation of Maumelle City Hall.

The Center on the Lake has paid staff members, but it relies heavily on volunteers. The center often collaborates with Counting on Each Other, a local nonprofit that’s committed to helping seniors in Maumelle.

Nicole Vogler, Director of Senior Services, worked with a local Maumelle historian on all of the interior room signage and names. The names are based on the people who settled in the Maumelle area before it was the Maumelle Ordnance Works. Each room has a short description of the family and the contributions that family made to the area.

Did You Know?
Maumelle was named after nearby Maumelle Mountain, now known as Pinnacle Mountain. The area was originally inhabited by the Osage Indians, and later European explorers discovered Maumelle prior to the Louisiana Purchase and American settlement. It wasn’t until 1974 that the city of Maumelle was founded by Jess Odom, an insurance executive and Arkansas businessman.

The historic element adds a sense of community and educates residents on the city’s beginnings.

In addition to helping older Maumelle citizens age and live well, the Center on the Lake will also become a new revenue stream for the city.

The facility will be available for rent after-hours for wedding receptions, family reunions, conferences and other events.

The Mason Cafe is also new to Maumelle, serving breakfast and lunch options with daily specials and affordable prices.

The new facility allows Maumelle citizens to keep their quality of life high while they age.

The center offers educational health classes, fitness classes, finance classes, field trips and more.

Civic leaders see the new center as a way to increase quality of life and generate additional revenue for the city.
