Nordex USA Inc. said Friday that it will supply 34 wind turbines to Exelon Wind LLC for the Beebe Community Wind Farm in Gratiot County, Mich.
Nordex said its manufacturing plant in Jonesboro will handle production of turbine nacelles for the project. Nacelles are cover housings that hold the generating components of the wind turbine.
The company said the 81.6-megawatt wind farm will be the first major project worldwide and the first in the United States to use the company’s N117/2400 turbine, specifically designed to maximize output in light wind conditions.
The 2.4-megawatt turbines, on 91 meter towers, will be located on 21,000 acres near Ithaca, Mich., about 45 miles north of Lansing.
Nordex said the electricity generated by the project will be sufficient to power more than 27,000 homes. It will be supplied to Consumers Energy of Jackson, Mich., under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
Work will start on the site in May, and turbines are scheduled to be delivered there in September. Nordex will be responsible for delivery, installation, commissioning and testing of the turbines and will provide ongoing maintenance under a 20-year contract.
Beebe Community Wind Farm is the first project that Nordex USA has developed, after entering a joint venture last year with a local developer who initiated the project.
