Note from Arkansas Women’s Hall of Fame Chair Holly Fish

2 min read

“Each time a girl opens a book and reads a womanless history, she learns she is worth less,” said gender bias researcher and trailblazer Myra Pollack Sadker.

To me, this answers why we focus on preserving the stories of the women who have impacted history. If we don’t know our own history, then how can a young woman know the power of possibility and opportunity?

The Arkansas Women’s Hall of Fame was born from the mindset of preserving and telling the stories of all women from all walks of life who have made a significant difference in our state. We draw inspiration from those who have come before us.

Arkansas women have proven to be quite a powerful force to reckon with and continue to do so. We have been home to the first African-American woman recognized as a symphonic composer with a piece played by a major orchestra, the first female pilot to set an altitude world record and win a national air race, the first female to star in a western TV series and the first female African-American who paved the way for women of color in the Miss America pageant.

The impressive list goes on. If one of these stories creates a spark in a young female mind and leads her to achieve her hopes and dreams, we’ve done our job.

The Arkansas Women’s Hall of Fame Board is excited to announce our exhibit has a found a home, thanks to our partnership with the Statehouse Convention Center, and will be stationed opposite the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame. We encourage you to view the exhibit during this year’s induction ceremony on Aug. 24.

We are thankful for the many businesses and individuals who have partnered with us to make this hall of fame come to fruition now and for many years to come.

I am looking forward to seeing you at the event as we witness and make history happen together.
