John Ferriola will retire as chairman and CEO of Nucor Corp. on Dec. 31, and the company’s board of directors has named Leon Topalian president and COO.
Topalian will succeed Ferriola as CEO on Jan. 1.
He has served as an executive vice president and as vice president. Topalian joined the company in 1996. He has been the general manager at two Nucor facilities, in Arkansas and Illinois, as well as a Melting and Casting manager, an operations manager, a cold mill production supervisor and a project engineer.
Ferriola served as chairman since 2014 and as CEO since 2013. Previously, he was president, president and COO, COO of Steelmaking Operations, executive vice president and vice president.
He joined the company in 1991 as manager of Maintenance and Engineering at Nucor Steel-Texas. Ferriola later served as general manager of Vulcraft-Texas, Nucor Steel-Nebraska and Nucor Steel-Indiana.
He has been a director since 2011.
