The Arkansas Foodbank said this week that it received 40,000 pounds of chicken from OK Foods of Fort Smith.

“The donation by OK Foods represents a tremendous partnership that will help provide much needed protein to thousands of families in need this holiday season,” Foodbank CEO Rhonda Sanders said in a news release.

The nonprofit said Arkansas leads the nation with more than 26 percent of seniors facing food insecurity. The state is also ranked as one of the worst in the country for child hunger with more than one in four children not knowing where their next meal is coming from, the organization said.

“Our charge at OK Foods is to nourish the world,” OK Foods CEO Trent Goins said. “We are proud to support the work of our many community food banks serve the needs of our hungriest neighbors.”

OK Foods also donated chicken to three other Feeding America food banks, including River Valley Regional Food Bank and Northwest Arkansas Food Bank.

The Arkansas Foodbank is the largest food bank in Arkansas and a member of Feeding America and the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance, serving about 300 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, schools, colleges and other agencies that provide aid to the hungry.

OK Foods is a chicken producer now owned by Industrias Bachoco of Celaya, Mexico. It employs more than 3,000 workers in the U.S.
