Online Tutoring Program Adds ACT Math to Lineup

2 min read

Little Rock resident Dave Bobbitt has added ACT math help to his online tutoring program, Algebra Is Easy.

The program is designed to help high school students do better on the math portion of the test. It consists of eight one-hour classes, held on Monday and Wednesday evenings for the four weeks prior to the test.

Bobbitt spends the first class going over the test itself, including test-taking strategies and how to prepare for it. He uses the other seven classes to practice actual ACT tests in front of the students, showing them how to work through each individual problem.
"I’m trying to build confidence in them," he said. "I’d rather build that up and show them they can do it."

What makes Bobbitt’s approach different from a traditional tutoring session is the setup. It’s designed to help the students one-on-one without actually being one-on-one. He uses GotoMeeting.com, which hosts live webinars, to run the classes. Students can ask questions and get feedback on how to solve the problems.

Bobbitt started the program in September, and he has used the time since to test the system with only 10 students per class.

Math "is not an easy thing to get help in," he said. Bobbitt said he knows how to explain it so it’s easy to understand.

"I think that’s the main problem with math instructors and tutors," he said. "They’re used to using terms that other math people understand, but an eighth-grader doesn’t."

The ACT help program costs $99, and Bobbitt offers a similar SAT program as well.
"This class brings out what you already know," he said. "That can make a difference between you getting a scholarship and not getting one."
