Philander Smith Receives $19M Gift From MacKenzie Scott

2 min read

Philander Smith University has received a $19 million unrestricted gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, the largest single contribution in the university’s 147-year history.

The investment aims to strengthen Philander Smith’s ability to advance its mission of educating students who are grounded as advocates for social justice.

The unrestricted nature of the gift allows university leadership and the Board of Trustees to allocate funds strategically in support of institutional priorities, including scholarships, academic innovation, infrastructure and long-term financial sustainability.

“This gift is a resounding vote of confidence in our mission and our momentum,” Maurice D. Gipson, president and CEO of Philander Smith University, said in a press release. “It positions us to invest boldly in student success, facilities enhancement, and programs that prepare the next generation of Philander Smith leaders. We are profoundly grateful for this transformational support, which allows us to Move Philander First with renewed purpose and vision.”

MacKenzie Scott is an American novelist and philanthropist who was married to Jeff Bezos, the co-founder of Amazon, from 1993 to 2019. She has donated to several Historically Black Colleges and Universities since her divorce with Bezos.

With a commitment to ‘Moving Philander First,’ the university aims to lay a foundation for the future —advancing excellence, equity and opportunity.

“This moment is deeply personal as a Philander Smith graduate,” Tionna Jenkins, chair of the Philander Smith University Board of Trustees, said in the release. “Ms. Scott’s generosity helps ensure that the university continues to thrive and expand its impact for generations to come.”
