Phillips County Chamber Gets Grant for Leadership Program

1 min read

A two-year grant for almost $40,000 was recently awarded to the Phillips County Chamber of Commerce to implement a civic leadership development program.

According to a release, the grant was given to the chamber by the Delta Bridge Project with support from the Walton Family Foundation.

The grant is intended to identify and train potential civic leadership on multiple levels and ties into the Phillips County Strategic Community Plan. The plan, introduced in 2009, is the second community revitalization plan undergone in Phillips County. According to the Delta Bridge Project, the original plan leveraged more than $74 million in support of community and economic development.

The initiative has three facets: an annual, nine-month Chamber Leadership Academy, a leadership development certificate that may be obtained through the Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas, and a new Phillips County Volunteer Corps.

"We hope this program will provide an opportunity for people who want to step up and make Phillips County a better place to live," Chamber Executive Director Doug Friedlander said in the release. "By recognizing the strength of our residents, and the possibilities for our community, we hope this program helps build a foundation of leaders for present and future generations."
