El Dorado Ballot Committee Launches Push for Sunday Alcohol SalesLock Icon

A representative of Brookshire Grocery Co. has filed documents with the state of Arkansas to pursue an election to approve Sunday alcohol sales in El Dorado.

On Nov. 14, Kevan Fenderson, the director of government relations for the Texas-based grocery and pharmacy chain, formed a local-option ballot question committee called Keep Our Dollars in El Dorado, according to a filing with the Arkansas Ethics Commission. The filing indicated the committee was formed to “support petition and election to support Sunday sales of alcohol.”

El Dorado City Clerk Heather McVay told Whispers via email that no ballot measures had been filed with her office but interested parties have begun the process to circulate petitions. McVay said a measure would require valid signatures from 15% of the total votes cast in the last mayoral election. In 2022, 4,480 votes were cast in the mayor’s race, meaning a measure would need at least 672 signatures to qualify for the ballot.

Brookshire operates more than 220 stores under several brands, including two stores in El Dorado, one in White Hall and one in Hot Springs Village.

The committee filing listed Fenderson, of Tyler, Texas, as the chair and John Hatch and Rebecca Hatch, both of Buda, Texas, as the other members. The Hatches run Texas Petition Strategies, a company that works with petitions and ballot measures.
