Rate of Uninsured Americans Fell to 7.9% in 2022

In 2022, 26 million Americans — or 7.9% of the population — were uninsured, the lowest percentage since 2017, according to a September report from the U.S. Census Bureau.

“In the decade before the enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010, the uninsured rate averaged 15.0 percent,” the Peter G. Peterson Foundation noted earlier this month.

ACA provisions that went into effect in 2014 let states expand Medicaid eligibility and create health insurance marketplaces, contributing to a continuing decline in the share of uninsured people nationally, the foundation said.v
