Red Chaise Designs of Conway Remains Firmly in the Black

2 min read

Indianapolis transplant Helen Lockhart began Red Chaise Designs, a full-service interior design firm, out of her home about a year ago with a pay-as-you-go approach and so far it’s paid off.

The company is growing. Earlier this month, Lockhart was able to move the business out of her house and into a 700-SF space she rents at 823 Chestnut St. in Conway. "I had no idea in my wildest dreams it would be this successful," she said.
Lockhart, who takes on about 10 clients at a time, said the business not only sustains itself, but is profitable.

Before opening her business, Lockhart said, she worried about whether the community would support her venture. But she is already seeing repeat clients and their recommendations producing new clients.

Her advice to others looking to start a new business is: "Take it slow and steady. Don’t overextend yourself, especially financially."

With 13 years of design experience, Lockhart said she counts her versatility and attention to clients’ needs as some of her best attributes as a designer. "I try to make the home a reflection of them, not me," she said.

Lockhart plans soon to offer unusual items in her storefront. And later, she hopes to expand her client base.

To network and help people cultivate their own design esthetic, Lockhart is hosting a summer seminar series at area retailers. The sessions, which begin July 7, are $30 each and include topics such as "Designing With Fabric," "Uniquely Furnishing Your Space," "Coloring Your World" and more.
