What’s the future of the logistics industry in Arkansas?

The future of the logistics industry in Arkansas will be shaped by technological advancements, such as the increased use of automation, artificial intelligence and blockchain technology. E-commerce growth will continue to drive demand for faster and more flexible delivery solutions, leading to expectations for last-mile delivery and the expansion of warehousing and distribution networks. Additionally, the industry will need to adapt to evolving regulatory landscapes and address challenges related to workforce shortages and cybersecurity threats.

How has the industry changed during your time in the sector?

The transportation industry has undergone significant transformations driven by technology and evolving consumer demands. One major challenge has been the increase in fraud, which companies within the industry have had to adapt to. Technological advancements, such as GPS navigation, autonomous vehicles and the use of big data analytics, have improved operational efficiency and safety.

How should freight brokerage firms balance their books between spot and contract work?

Firms should balance their books between spot and contract work by diversifying their portfolio to manage risks and maintain flexibility. Contract work provides a steady revenue stream and long-term stability, allowing firms to establish reliable relationships with shippers and carriers. Spot work, on the other hand, offers opportunities to capitalize on market fluctuations and higher margins, especially during periods of high demand.

What do you wish more businesses knew about logistics before engaging companies like yours?

Before engaging logistics companies, businesses should understand the complexity and importance of supply chain management, including the various factors that affect shipping costs and delivery times. Additionally, effective communication and collaboration are crucial for optimizing logistics operations, so businesses should be prepared to share relevant data and work closely with their logistics partners. Understanding these aspects can lead to more efficient and cost-effective logistics solutions, ultimately benefiting the business.

Is artificial intelligence playing a role in the industry or will it play a role?

Artificial intelligence is already playing a significant role in the logistics industry and is expected to have an even greater impact in the future. AI technologies are being used to optimize route planning, improve demand forecasting and enhance inventory management, resulting in increased efficiency and reduced costs.

What is your advice to those wanting to get into the logistics sector?

For those wanting to enter the logistics sector, it’s important to gain a strong understanding of the supply chain’s various components, including transportation, warehousing, the burden of fraud and distribution. Acquiring skills in data analysis and technology is crucial. Networking with industry professionals and seeking internships or entry-level positions can provide valuable hands-on experience and insights into the field.

How do you expect your background as a CEO to influence the way you lead the Arkansas House?

Thirty years of experience in the supply chain and logistics management sector have taught me a lot about relationship-building, problem-solving, connecting the dots and collaboration to reach the greater good.

What is the most effective way for businesses to engage legislators about issues that affect them?

It is critically important to know your elected officials on a first-name basis. Don’t let your first contact be one at a time of crisis. Develop those relationships and your legislators will work hard for your business interests.

As speaker, how do you balance serving members of both parties with your own partisan preferences and values?

The role of the speaker of the House is just that.  You represent the whole body. However, I first have a responsibility to my God and my family values. As long as I keep them in the forefront, I believe the members will all be very proud of my leadership and how I represent their individual interests.

Why did you decide to get into the field of politics?

I believe that we are all called to serve in some capacity in life. I have spent the bulk of my career building bridges and solving problems for those who couldn’t do that themselves. Serving the people of Cabot, Lonoke County and all of Arkansas is the perfect place to execute the calling God has placed over me: to serve Him by serving and meeting the needs of others.
