Rex Nelson Joins Simmons First as Director of Corporate Communications

1 min read

Rex Nelson will leave his job as president of Arkansas Independent Colleges & Universities at the end of May to become director of corporate communications for Simmons First National Corp. of Pine Bluff.

The publicly traded bank holding company announced the new role and Nelson’s hiring on Monday morning.

“We are extremely excited to announce the addition of Rex Nelson to our Simmons family,” CEO George Makris Jr. said in a press release. “Rex is a perfect fit for this leadership role.”

Nelson is a former journalist — he was editor of Arkansas Business and continues to write a column for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette — and also served as spokesman for former Gov. Mike Huckabee. He has been president of AICU, an association of private colleges in the state, since 2011.

His resume also includes time spent with The Communications Group in Little Rock and in a full-time appointed position with the Delta Regional Authority, a regional planning and economic development agency.
