Scott Carroll Heads from Democrat-Gazette to Channel 7

1 min read

In the case of reporter Scott Carroll, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s loss is KATV’s gain.

The Little Rock ABC affiliate has hired Carroll, a 2012 graduate of the University of Memphis, as an off-camera news writer. Carroll’s first day at Channel 7 was last Monday, almost exactly a month after his last shift at the daily newspaper. He and a half-dozen other newsroom veterans were subjects of chain-wide cutbacks at Wehco Media Inc. in late October, which the paper’s leadership described as necessary to maintain modest profitability.

Carroll, known for his multimedia skills, was a “huge get” for the station, according to News Director Nick Genty. “I’m excited to have him on the team and am expecting great things,” Genty said.

Last Monday, Carroll tweeted out a link to his “first byline at the new gig,” a report on a Little Rock robbery. At the Democrat-Gazette, Carroll was known for his police coverage, and for getting results. He led a squad of journalists after a notorious shooting left 27 wounded at Power Ultra Lounge in July. That effort featured real-time victim accounts and crowd-sourced photos and videos.

Carroll’s reporting on frequent crashes led the Little Rock Police Department to change its automobile pursuit policies, and coverage on a Jacksonville police chief’s misdemeanor past in Texas factored into the chief’s dismissal.
