Dr. Shane Speights has been hired as dean of the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) College of Osteopathic Medicine’s site at Arkansas State University at Jonesboro.
Speights will provide leadership for students, faculty and staff in curriculum, community outreach and engagement, clinical service programs, research, and professional and governmental relations.
“I look forward to championing the mission of Dr. Barbara Ross-Lee, which is to educate osteopathic medical physicians in Arkansas for Arkansas,” Speights said. “The demand for better health care in Arkansas is great, especially among the disparate populations, and no single entity can overcome this challenge. Through collaborative partnerships across the educational continuum, we can raise this state and region of the nation to the level of care it needs and deserves.”
Speights was instrumental in establishing the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine at A-State, where he served as associate dean of clinical education. He is board-certified by both the American College of Osteopathic Physicians and the American Board of Family Medicine. He also served as past president of the Arkansas Osteopathic Medical Association.
Speights received his medical degree from the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City. He completed his residency training at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Northeast Family Medicine Residency Program at St. Bernards Medical Center.
Therral Story has been reappointed to the board of trustees of Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia.
Gov. Asa Hutchinson initially appointed Story to fill the position left open by board chairman O.A. “Buddy” Franks, who died in September 2015. Story’s new term expires in 2022.
Carmen Robinson, assistant dean for student services at the College of Arts, Letters & Sciences at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has been awarded the 2017 Bonita C. Jacobs Transfer Champion Rising Star award from the National Institution for the Study of Transfer Students.
The award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated exceptional advocacy and leadership in the development and implementation of transfer-focused programs, policies or research and whose efforts have made a significant contribution to the improvement of transfer student access, persistence and success.
