The new gaming floor at Southland Casino Hotel in West Memphis
Southland Casino Hotel in West Memphis said Thursday that it had officially completed a $320 million project to transform the one-time greyhound track, which is shutting down at year’s end, into a Las Vegas-style gambling destination.
The three-year project includes a gleaming new 20-story hotel with 300 rooms. Southland also added 113,000 SF of gaming space that features 2,400 slot machines, 50 live table games and a variety of bars and dining options.
The expansion began after Arkansas voters legalized full casino gambling in 2018. Southland began phasing out greyhound racing around the same time, reducing the number of races each year. The dogs are scheduled to make their final run on Dec. 31, ending more than 60 years of racing.
Delaware North of Buffalo, New York, owns and operates Southland as one of its dozen gaming operations in the U.S. and Australia.
“The Southland expansion is the culmination of a legacy project for Delaware North,” CEO Lou Jacobs said in a news release. “The completion puts Southland on the map as a true casino destination that will draw patrons from both near and far.”
