Dr. Robert L. Saylors III, an oncologist at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, recently was installed in the Jaxon C. Lee-Dr. Robert L. Saylors III Endowed Chair in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.
Background: Ten years ago, Saylors treated infant Jaxon Lee for acute myeloid leukemia. He oversaw Jaxon’s treatment and bone marrow transplant. In November 2010, Jaxon’s parents, Cliff and Kristin, donated $1 million in honor of Jaxon. The Lees said they wanted to do something to honor both their son, now 10, and the man who saved his life.
Experience: Saylors began as a pediatric oncologist at Children’s Hospital in 1993, after completing his fellowship at the Washington University School of Medicine in 1991. He also is an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
Endowment: "An endowed chair is one of the highest academic honors for the holder and assists ACH in attracting and retaining the highest quality physicians," said Dr. Jonathan Bates, president and CEO of Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Saylors said he was honored by the gift and that "the resources provided … will enable us to intensify our efforts to achieve our goal of curing all children who come to us for care." He will be able to use the money for research, clinical support or education in the care of hematology and oncology patients at the hospital. n
