This month may be considered “the most wonderful time of the year,” but it often brings financial pressure, family conflict and emotional triggers that create significant stress. For people in recovery, this stress is compounded and the relapse rate increases at least 150% during the holiday season.
As a workplace community, everyone has a part to play in making the holidays healthier, safer and more supportive for colleagues in recovery. This is why initiatives like Together Arkansas, an opioid response education effort, focus on educating employers about drug-related issues and the vital role businesses play in maintaining a ready, drug-free workforce.
Practical Ways to Support Colleagues During the Holidays
In 2024, there were 388 predicted overdose deaths in Arkansas, highlighting the harrowing toll opioids take on communities. For every 100 individuals in the U.S. there are 37.5 opioid prescriptions written for medical use, but that number nearly doubles in Arkansas to an astounding 71.5. However, employers and coworkers can take actionable steps to make the workplace recovery-friendly, especially during the challenging holiday season. Consider these tips to create an inclusive and supportive workplace this year.
► Keep holiday parties and events welcoming by choosing activities that are inclusive and sober-friendly, such as being mindful to offer non-alcoholic beverages alongside traditional offerings.
► Avoid alcohol-centric events by making the celebration about something such as team-building, games or a gift exchange, with attendance optional.
► Consider offering “safe spaces” designated for employees who may need to step away, regroup, or practice self-care during stressful events or days.
► Foster a culture where employees feel comfortable discussing their needs, such as flexible scheduling for those who may need to attend recovery meetings or therapy.
► Provide reminders of the mental health and substance use resources that are available, or enable new ones such as an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and confidential counseling, a benefit that is often underutilized. Together Arkansas’s free online course and business toolkit can assist employers in combating OUD with valuable information and downloadable resources.
► Encourage health and self-care by recommending regular breaks, boundaries and routines.
