As a young girl in Jonesboro, Susan White fell in love with numbers and ledgers and carbon paper in the office supplies section of the old TG&Y stores.
“Isn’t that funny?” White said. “I would take order books and carbon paper home and set up my office. I would pick names and numbers from the phone book and use a little bit of imagination. I loved office supplies.”
White, now 53, turned her child’s play into a successful career in finance, first for nearly three decades with Tyson Foods and, for the past two years, as CFO of George’s Inc. in Springdale. White said she had beautiful memories of working for 28 years at Tyson before making the move to George’s.
“I had an opportunity to meet with the George family and was very impressed with the culture they have here,” said White, who also praised Tyson’s work environment. “To be able to work for a company that is privately held and you have active involvement from the family, you can see how strong their work ethic is. You can get a small group of people in a room and make a decision very quickly. The impact to make a difference for all the shareholders was very inspiring.”
She said there wasn’t an adjustment moving from Tyson to George’s, since both are in the poultry business, and her transition into a leadership role as the new kid went well once her new colleagues understood she was all about helping them and the company find success.
“It takes a little while when you come in and you don’t know these people to show them how you operate and that you care about them,” White said. “They care more about that than any technical ability. I’m a part of the team, and all I want to do is help us to grow and improve.”
