Tyson Foods CFO John R. Tyson Charged With Public Intoxication

2 min read

Tyson Foods Inc. CFO John R. Tyson, the 32-year-old son of the chairman of the board, was arrested early Sunday morning for public intoxication and criminal trespassing.

Tyson was booked in the Washington County jail later that morning and was released on bond Sunday evening. He faces two misdemeanor charges.

A Tyson Foods spokesperson said the company was aware of the incident and had no further comment.

A preliminary police report said an officer responded to a burglary call at 1:48 a.m. from a woman who lived on Mock Street in downtown Fayetteville. The woman said an unknown man was asleep in her bed, and she told the officer she assumed he had entered through her unlocked front door.

The woman is not identified in the police report other than being college age. She told police she didn’t know the person in her home.

The officer said he was allowed entry into the home and found the man, whom he later identified as Tyson, asleep in a first-floor bedroom. His clothing and identification were on the floor at the foot of the bed, the report said.

The officer said he woke up Tyson, who briefly sat up but didn’t respond to the officer. The officer said Tyson then tried to lie back down and go to sleep.

The officer said there was a smell of alcohol coming from Tyson’s “breath and person.” He said Tyson appeared “sluggish and uncoordinated.”

Fayetteville police placed Tyson under arrest.

The Associated Press reported that Tyson apologized Monday in a companywide memo and said he is getting counseling for alcohol abuse.

“I am embarrassed for personal conduct that is inconsistent with my personal values, the company’s values and the high expectations we hold for each other here at Tyson Foods,” the memo says. “I made a serious mistake and this has caused me to reflect deeply on the impact my actions can have on others.”

Tyson is the son of former CEO and current Chairman of the Board John H. Tyson, whose grandfather founded Tyson Foods. John R. Tyson joined his family’s company as Chief Sustainability Officer in 2019 and was promoted to CFO in September.

The younger Tyson is also on the Winrock International board of directors.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and psychology from Harvard and a master’s in business administration from Stanford.

Filings with the SEC show Tyson’s annual salary is $650,000.
