Tyson Foods Elects Board Members, Expresses Confidence in 2024 Rebound

2 min read

Executives at Tyson Foods Inc. of Springdale  (NYSE: TSN) are confident in the company’s direction after a rough fiscal 2023.

Tyson Foods Chairman John Tyson and CEO Donnie King spoke at the company’s annual shareholders meeting Thursday in Springdale. At the meeting, shareholders elected a 14-member board of directors and voted down shareholders’ proposals dealing with child labor, climate lobbying, deforestation and packaging.

The meeting was held three days after Tyson Foods reported its first-quarter earnings for fiscal 2024. The company had revenue of $13.3 billion, which was an increase of $40 million from the previous year, and income of $107 million, down from $316 million.

“We’ve started this year with a lot of positive momentum,” John Tyson said. “I can tell you the team that is in charge right now is as focused and collaborative and as efficient as they’ve been for a while. We are moving the right direction. We are fundamentally strong, and we are [as] prepared for the future as we have been in a while.”

The profitable quarter was the first for Tyson Foods since the first quarter of 2023. In fiscal 2023, Tyson Foods reported a loss of $648 million, including more than $770 million in operating income in its chicken segment. During the year, the company closed or announced the closure of six facilities and said it would cut its leadership positions by 15% and its corporate positions by 10%.

“We took bold actions to improve our performance in 2023,” King said. “Closing plants is always a difficult decision, but it was the right one for our business and our shareholders.”

The effects of the strategy have been promising for Tyson Foods so far: the chicken segment reported first-quarter 2024 operating income of $177 million, an increase from $69 million in the first quarter a year ago.

“I’m pleased to report that every one of our businesses is executing better today than 18 months ago,” King said.
