Dr. Rebecca Lochmann, professor of aquaculture and fisheries at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, was inducted as president of the World Aquaculture Society during the organization’s annual business meeting, held in Jeju, South Korea, in May.
The society is a global, professional organization that seeks to contribute to the progressive and sustainable development of aquaculture in the world.
“Dr. Lochmann is one of our most accomplished faculty members, whose reputation in the field reaches across the globe,” Dr. Laurence B. Alexander, chancellor of UAPB, said in a news release. “We are immensely proud of her success and congratulate her on her induction as president of the World Aquaculture Society.”
As president of the WAS, Lochmann will lead a 15-member board of directors. She previously served two terms as secretary of the society and has served in other professional organizations including the Central Arkansas chapter of Sigma Xi, and has been a member of the Catfish Farmers of Arkansas, the Arkansas Bait and Ornamental Fish Grower’s Association and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
Lochmann earned her doctorate in wildlife and fisheries science from Texas A&M University, a master’s degree in marine biology from the Florida Institute of Technology and a bachelor’s degree in zoology from Louisiana State University.
During her tenure at UAPB, Lochmann has procured dozens of research grants, done international research, and recently obtained a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development to enhance the nutritional value of tilapia for human health.
Next month, she will begin her appointment as chair of the UAPB Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries and interim director of the Aquaculture/Fisheries Center of Excellence.
