The University of Arkansas at Little Rock on Monday announced it had received a $1.215 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education for a school program aimed at helping disadvantaged students gain opportunities for success in doctoral studies.
The five-year grant supports the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program, which serves low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities. The program, named for one of the seven astronauts killed in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, aims to help students progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs.
UA Little Rock supports 26 McNair scholars each year. Students participate in a summer research internship, complete a required research project with a faculty member and write a paper on the results.
The ultimate goal is for the scholars to receive a Ph.D. 10 years after they have graduated from UA Little Rock.
“Our university has a strong track record of McNair Scholars not only successfully moving on to doctoral programs, but also thriving in their careers with a commitment to inspire others,” said Dr. David Montague, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs–student success, said in a news release.
