UALR School of Mass Communication Gets $1.4M Bequest from Winn Trust

1 min read

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock School of Mass Communication has received a $1.4 million bequest from the Johnnie A. Winn Revocable Trust.

The gift will establish the Dan & Johnnie Winn Memorial Scholarship in the College of Social Sciences & Communication. The scholarship will provide financial assistance for all educated-related expenses for those pursuing a degree in the School of Mass Communication, including tuition, books and fees. A preference will be given to students seeking a degree with a career emphasis in journalism or radio.

“This endowment will significantly aid us in recruiting high quality students to our program,” Olaf Hoerschelmann, director of the School of Mass Communication, said in a news release.”

Both Dan and Johnnie Winn had long careers in radio. Johnnie Winn was the first woman in Arkansas to be a licensed amateur radio operator.

Dan Winn was the former chief engineer at the KARK radio station, now KARN-AM 920, in Little Rock from 1930-77. He left the station to create his own firm and establish the Arkansas Radio Network. He received the Arkansas Broadcasters Association Pioneer Award in 1966, and earned a life membership in 1982. Winn also served as past chairman of the Arkansas Emergency Broadcast System and the Advisory Board Education Radio at UALR.
