UAMS announced that its affiliate research institutions saw research funding grow by 14.5% in the fiscal year ending June 30, with $203.1 million in grants.
It’s the third consecutive year that UAMS has reported double-digit percentage increases in research funding from outside the institution. In fiscal 2021, UAMS and its affiliated researchers received $177.4 million in grants, a 12.2% increase over fiscal year 2020.
Over the past five years, UAMS grant funding has grown from $89.8 million to $157.9 million.
“We have a five-year trend of steady progress toward meeting our short-term and long-term goals,” Shuk-Mei Ho, UAMS vice chancellor for research and innovation, said in a news release. “All of the colleges and all of the units are putting their best foot forward. Most importantly, this impressive growth of our faculty research would not have been possible without the support of a group of highly dedicated research administrative professionals in the Division of Research & Innovation.”
Pearl McElfish, who directs the Office of Community Health & Research at the UAMS Northwest Regional Campus, led all researchers with 11 grants totaling $18.3 million for fiscal year 2022.

- Lawrence Cornett, distinguished professor, College of Medicine, Department of Physiology and Cell Biology; one grant totaling $4,036,991
- Carol Cornell, professor, chair, Department of Health Behavior and Health Education, and Pebbles Fagan, professor, both at Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health; one grant totaling $3,864,520
