UAMS has opened a clinic in Fayetteville for patients experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 for weeks or months after their diagnosis, a condition known as long COVID.
The clinic at the UAMS Health Neighborhood Clinic at 1125 N. College Ave. was created after doctors began seeing former COVID patients return with lingering symptoms, such as shortness of breath, muscle aches, cough, fatigue, loss of taste or smell, or difficulty concentrating.
The clinic offers extensive evaluations from a multidisciplinary team of students and trained health providers in field ranging from physical therapy to radiation sciences
Dr. Sheena CarlLee, director of the clinic, said that even patients who had mild symptoms when they tested positive can develop other symptoms months later that may be related to their COVID-19 infection.
“We are seeing patients with a wide variety of symptoms that require a unique treatment regimen,” she said in a news release. “We treat the whole patient.”
A recent Brookings Institution report estimates that 2 million to 4 million people are out of the workforce because of long COVID, making the condition a larger factor in the national labor shortage than previously thought.
