The Arkansas Geriatric Education Collaborative at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences received a three-year grant of $2.3 million to provide geriatric training.
The training will be for geriatric workforce professionals, primary care practitioners, first responders, direct care workers and lay caregivers who provide services in poor, rural areas of Arkansas. The effort is led by by Ronni Chernoff, professor at UAMS.
“We felt extremely fortunate, and we’re excited that we will be providing training to groups of people we’ve never been able to reach before,” Chernoff said in a news release. “The grant was very competitive and not all our peer institutions in other states received funding.”
The collaborative will work with state universities and the UAMS Centers on Aging; 73 of Arkansas’ 75 counties are fully or partially medically underserved.
