The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff has broken ground on a $33 million student engagement center designed to be a hub for campus and community health education and student wellness, assessment, and counseling.
The 62,000-SF project will improve the L.A. Davis Sr. Student Union, which was built in the ’50s. In addition hosting health and wellness programs, it will have an indoor running and walking track, a four-lane bowing alley, a recreation area with pool tables and a 1,200-seat theater. It will also be home to the university’s international programs.
Consistent with UAPB’s land-grant mission, the center will also provide outreach service to the region through sponsorship of community health fairs and other events to inform the community on public health issues.
The project, designed by AMR Architects Inc. of Little Rock, is expected to be completed in late 2024 or early 2025.
It’s one of several upgrades underway on the campus, including the renovation of Larson Hall for faculty research and extension work and construction of a new residence hall, the first since 2017.
“We are undergoing a renaissance in many ways, and this renaissance is taking place in the education that our students are getting and in the buildings and facilities,” Chancellor Laurence Alexander said.
