UCA STEM Institute Awarded $359K In Grants

The University of Central Arkansas STEM Institute this week announced that it has received $359,547 in grants during the 2016-17 academic year.

The institute received $57,780 from the U.S. Department of Education to train 20 teachers, grades five through eight, from the South Conway County and Little Rock School districts. The teachers will receive 60 hours fo professional development in how to use integrated math and science in their classrooms.

The grant was funded by the federal No Child Left Behind Act and went through the Arkansas Department of Higher Education.

The institute also received $6,600 from the Arkansas STEM Coalition to promote STEM education in grades three through six by purchasing science equipment and supplies to facilitate hands-on learning. Each school will receive approximately $3,000 worh of equipment. 

Another ADHE grant of $173,000 will be used to hire two science specialists, who will train teachers.

And a $122,167 grant awarded to the institute and the Arch Ford Educational Cooperative will be used to create a partnership to develop science education initiatives with five high-need school districts, Catholic Schools of Arkansas and Academic Plus Charter School.
