Life expectancy at birth was similar in the United States and peer countries on average in 1980, but the gap has grown substantially, according to the Peterson Center on Healthcare and KFF.
The COVID-19 pandemic further widened the gap, and life expectancy in 2022 was nearly five years shorter in the U.S. than in peer countries: 77.5 years in the U.S. compared with 82.2 years in comparable countries, on average.
Since the peak of the pandemic, however, U.S. life expectancy has slightly rebounded. Comparable countries include Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
