US Steel Plans New Facility in Osceola

1 min read

U.S. Steel of Pittsburgh on Wednesday said it plans to build a new facility in Osceola, expanding its investment in northeast Arkansas.

The news comes after U.S. Steel last week detailed an $11 billion multiyear growth plan under new owner Nippon Steel that includes modernizing and expanding its operations.

In a statement, the company said its Big River Steel facility in Osceola will be the site of a new direct reduced iron (DRI) plant that will “propel our Mini Mill segment toward industry leadership in advanced, sustainable steel production.”

The plant will produce feedstock for U.S. Steel’s electric arc furnaces, “bolstering our raw materials edge and strengthening a dependable domestic supply chain,” the statement said. “This investment highlights our partnership with Nippon Steel as we collaborate to execute impactful projects.”

U.S. Steel said more detailed information will be shared as the project progresses.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on Wednesday first reported U.S. Steel’s plans for the new plant.

U.S. Steel has invested billions of dollars in northeast Arkansas since 2019, when it announced a $700 million stake in Big River Steel in Osceola. About a year later, the company purchased the remaining stake in Big River Steel for $774 million in cash.

U.S. Steel doubled down on the region with a $3 billion mill, Big River 2, that began production in late 2024.

The Associated Press contributed information to this report.
