A web video channel programmed by eHow Home and featuring Arkansas-based garden guru P. Allen Smith has launched on YouTube, the massive online video website owned by Google Inc.
Smith’s channel, which features video segments on gardening, landscaping, home construction and sustainable living, is among 100 other channels of original content that celebrities and media brands are programming for site and launching this year.
Smith’s segments were filmed at his 567-acre Moss Mountain Farm, 20 minutes northwest of Pinnacle Mountain in central Arkansas. One video series, "P. Allen’s Garden Home Challenge," tracks Smith and his colleagues as they build a 1,600-SF environmentally friendly home for $150,000 in 150 days.
The first segment is available below:
"Doing the various TV shows, books, connecting to the public on social media sites, our blogs and now the new eHow Home channel on YouTube — there is so much to share!" Allen said in a news release about the launch of his channel.
"We have shows about everything — from the garden, decorating, style tips, antiquing and junk shop finds to ‘green’ alternatives," he said. "Many are brand new shows that I can’t wait for everyone to enjoy and learn from in an entertaining yet informative way!"
Smith, an author and contributor to NBC’s "The Today Show" and "The Weather Channel," already hosts programs on public television, including "P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home" and "P. Allen Smith’s Garden to Table." He also hosts the syndicated 30-minute show "P. Allen Smith Gardens."
YouTube’s goal is to generate about 25 hours of new, original programming per day. Other brands adding channels include the Wall Street Journal, Slate, Pitchfork TV and SB Nation, a national network of sports blogs.
Publicly traded Demand Media (NYSE: DMD) of Santa Monica, Calif., owns and manages the eHow Home Channel, partnering with Smith to provide content.
