1 min read

National Rifle Association President Wayne LaPierre on Friday announced that former Rep. Asa Hutchison, R-Ark., will lead an NRA program that will develop a model security plan for schools that relies on armed volunteers.

Hutchinson, who ran  unsuccessfully for Arkansas governor against Mike Beebe in 2006, is considered a likely candidate for governor in 2014.

The Republican was the  Department of Homeland Security’s first Under Secretary for Border and Transportation Security. He was also administrator of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration under President George W. Bush.

Hutchinson served as city attorney in Bentonville, as a U.S. Attorney in Fort Smith and as a private lawyer before he was elected to the U.S. House in 1996.
