Dr. W. James Chon has been appointed to manage the Renal Transplant Program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences as medical director. Chon will also serve as an associate professor of medicine at the UAMS College of Medicine.
“My role at UAMS will be to develop a kidney transplant program that is tailored for each patient’s needs,” Chon said. “In particular, I plan to develop a robust live kidney donor transplant program by educating patients, their family members and the general public.”
Dr. John Arthur, director of the Nephrology Division in the UAMS College of Medicine, said, “Dr. Chon brings outstanding organizational skills and depth of experience to our renal transplant program.”
Most recently, Chon was an assistant professor and medical director of the living donor transplant program at the University of Chicago Department of Medicine Section of Nephrology. He completed an internship/residency at the University of Rochester Department of Medicine.
Chon received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Cornell University and a medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine.
Dr. Ahmed S. Ahmed has joined the physician team at St. Bernards Heart & Vascular in Jonesboro as an interventional cardiologist.
Ahmed completed an interventional cardiology fellowship at the Hartford Hospital-University of Connecticut. In addition, he completed a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Penn State Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine-Penn State Heart & Vascular Institute. He also completed an internal medicine residency program at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
Before coming to the United States for advanced medical training, Ahmed earned bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery degrees from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Khartoum in Khartoum, Sudan.
Guy L. Peeples has joined the General & Specialty Surgery Clinic of North Arkansas Regional Medical Center in Harrison.
Peeples is board certified by the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Arkansas Medical Society. He has more than 20 years of experience in general surgery, including endoscopic and dialysis procedures and thoracic and vascular surgeries.
Phil Davison, Drew B. Jensen and Josh F. Maloney have joined the staff at NARMC as pharmacists. Each earned his doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences at Little Rock.
Davison has a bachelor’s degree in education from Arkansas State University; Jensen, a Bachelor of Arts in international studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Arkansas; and Maloney, a bachelor’s degree from Drury University in Springfield, Missouri.
Dr. Samir Patel has joined Sparks Health System in Fort Smith as an internal medicine physician.
Patel will treat adult patients for a number of conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid disease, heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He most recently completed an internal medicine residency at Western Reserve Health Education at Northeast Ohio Medical University in Youngstown, Ohio.
Melanie Roach has joined Ageless Health & Fitness as a physical therapist in Little Rock. Roach received her doctorate in physical therapy from the University of Central Arkansas and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Hendrix College in Conway. She is also a member of the American Physical Therapy Association.
Dr. James Head, an orthopedic surgeon, has joined the medical staff of Conway Regional Health System. Head completed a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at Florida Orthopaedic Institute and a five-year residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Oklahoma. Head received his medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
Dr. Chanda Cashen Chacón has been hired at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock as its new executive vice president and chief operating officer.
Chacón will report directly to ACH President and Chief Executive Officer Marcy Doderer and be responsible for operational leadership and accountability for system operations. In addition, Chacón will be responsible for creating and maintaining positive working relationships with members of the medical staff and boards and will help the president and CEO build a stronger partnership with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
