Walmart Health on Tuesday opened a location in Jacksonville, Florida, the first of five clinics the Bentonville-based retail giant has planned for the state as it expands its health care offerings.
The other locations are scheduled to open in the Jacksonville, Tampa and Orlando areas by early June, Walmart said in a news release.
Walmart Health provides primary care services, hearing, eye and dental care, lab and x-ray services, counseling services and a discount generic prescription program. Twenty clinics have already been opened in Arkansas, Georgia and Illinois.
The Florida locations will be the first to use Epic health technology, which Walmart said is the most widely-used and comprehensive health records system in the U.S. The system allows patients to securely access their health information, communicate with their providers, schedule appointments and pay bills on their phone or computer.
Dr. David Carmouche, senior vice president of Omnichannel Care Offerings at Walmart, said the Florida locations will help address demand for care in the state. Florida’s population is growing faster than the national average and, according to Carmouche, there’s only one primary care physician per 1,380 residents.
“We are part of these communities, and we are excited to bring more options for in-person and telehealth care services to our neighbors,” he said in the release.
