Westfall Named Interim Dean at UAMS College of Medicine (Movers & Shakers)

Christopher Westfall has been appointed interim dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. In this position, Westfall will lead the search for a new dean while also continuing his current roles in ophthalmology and clinical services.

“Dr. Westfall brings extensive leadership experience to his post as interim dean as well as strong dedication to our mission and a collegial approach to management,” UAMS Interim Chancellor Stephanie Gardner said in announcing the appointment. “He will ensure continuity and continuing growth in the college’s education, clinical and research programs.”

Westfall has been with the college since 1997 and was appointed chair of ophthalmology and director of the Jones Eye Institute in 2009. Westfall also served at Wilford Hall U.S. Air Force Medical Center, eventually retiring at the rank of colonel.

He earned his medical degree from Ohio State University and has certification from the American Board of Ophthalmology.


Karen Merle has been hired as a primary care physician at Mercy Clinic Internal Medicine and Pediatrics in Fort Smith. Merle graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and has more than 20 years of experience.


Jay Myers has been appointed to the board of the Conway Regional Health Foundation. Myers graduated from the University of Arkansas and is the spokesperson for the Crain Automotive Team in Conway.
