Work-Life Awards Honor Businesses, Nonprofits

Science Applications International Corporation, The Procter and Gamble Distribution Company, and the City of Fayetteville were among the winners Tuesday at the 2012 Arkansas Governor’s Work-Life Balance Awards held at The Peabody Little Rock.

The Work-Life Awards honor Arkansas employers who establish and provide resources that support employees in balancing the needs of both work and family.

The awards program, created in 2002, recognized the following winners:

• Small Company, Hutchinson Financial Inc.

• Medium Company – For Profit, Transamerica Employee Benefits

• Large Company – For Profit, Science Applications International Corporation, The Procter and Gamble Distribution Company

• Medium Company – Not for Profit, Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport, Winrock International

• Large Company – Not for Profit, City of Fayetteville

During the awards luncheon Tuesday, author Earl Maxwell talked about how a random conversation at the elevator became a life-changing moment.

Maxwell, author of “Service, Prosperity And Sanity (Positioning the Professional Service Firm for the Future),” recalled a chat with a female employee at Maxwell’s former CPA firm in Austin, Texas. When he learned the woman had been reluctant to ask for time off to attend a function for her children, Maxwell began to embrace the concept of work and life balance and has become a leading authority on the subject.

Maxwell now is CEO of St. David’s Foundation, a nonprofit devoted to improving health and healthcare in central Texas. He was the Governor’s Work-Life Balance Awards inaugural speaker 10 years ago.
