When it comes to providing for the health of others, the staff at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jonesboro is second to none. Keeping them at their top form is James Keller, who manages the hospital’s wellness program, Humana Vitality.

“Ensuring your own health needs are met is crucial to being able to care for others,” Keller said. “The programs that NEA Baptist offers allow their employees to do this, which in turn allows us to provide the highest level of care to our patients.”

Humana Vitality is a wellness and rewards program promoting well-being and healthy living by rewarding healthier choices with various incentives and prizes. Participants follow a customized program and earn Vitality Points™ for activities such as wearing a fitness device, completing a health assessment or getting a flu shot. Completion of activities and reaching wellness goals result in Vitality Bucks® which can be spent in the HumanaVitality® Mall.

“Once the employee starts earning Vitality Bucks, they can turn them into great rewards,” Keller said. “Movie tickets, hotel stays, digital cameras and more are all available as their reward for choosing to live healthier.”

The Humana Vitality program has five levels based on the participation of the employee base: Blue, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. An employee can graduate from one level to the next by meeting certain health goals, completing health-related educational courses, participating in annual wellness visits and a host of other activities.

NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital offers discounts on health insurance premiums if employees reach Bronze or Silver status. Employees can also receive benefits and rewards for reaching Silver, Gold and Platinum status. Other wellness programs at the hospital — such as the Biggest Loser competition and annual flu shots — are tied back to the program.

The winner of the Biggest Loser competition took home a HP Stream Laptop, second place received a one-year membership to the on-site Wellness Center and all employees who lost at least one pound were awarded 350 Humana Vitality Points™.

The hospital’s wellness program also holds benefits for the hospital in terms of better employee morale, fewer sick days and insurance claims and lower overall premiums. And, of course, employees reap the well-known benefits that come with living a healthier lifestyle.

“Healthy employees feel better about themselves, have more energy and are more positive, therefore, they are usually more productive,” Keller said. “This creates an environment where employees are engaged and feel the organization cares about their well-being.”
