Jamelle Brown met his future employer, former longtime Acxiom CEO Charles Morgan, when he was a sophomore at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
They were introduced by the now-retired Professor Craig Thompson, whose class hooked Brown on the wonderful world of data. Brown recalled being drawn in by an exercise that showed a surge in the purchase of both diapers and beer during storms.
“So that story fascinated me, the story of how data” could tie together elements as disparate as the environment, diapers and beer, he said.
Brown grew up in rural Arkansas and earned his computer science degree from the UA, minoring in mathematics. He also studied at the National Institute for Applied Sciences in Rouen, France.
He started his career at Acxiom in 2009 and joined Morgan’s new company, First Orion Corp., in 2016 as a founding member of its data team. Brown said he’s most proud of how his work building data processing platforms that can make predictions protects people from the “scam epidemic.”
He also helped launch his alma mater’s data science program.
