George Makris III, 36
EVP & General Counsel
Simmons First National Corp.
Little Rock
George Makris III wasn’t sure what direction to take his interest in law and governmental affairs as he moved through academia.
Makris received his undergraduate degree in political science in 2008 from Columbia University in New York, his law degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2011 and his master’s of law from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., in 2012.
Clerking at the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission opened the door to a job there for the Pine Bluff native. He followed that with work at Sidley Austin LLP, the international law firm specializing in securities regulation and enforcement.
Near the end of 2015, Makris left D.C. to return home to Arkansas as senior vice president and assistant general counsel at Simmons First National Corp., where his father, George Makris Jr., is CEO.
In April 2020, he was promoted to executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of Simmons First National, where he oversees its legal department.
Makris is on the board of advisers of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and is a past summer volunteer at Our House.
