Apptegy Inc. has provided a wealth of mentors to Benjamin Berley, and his career there began with him taking a big leap.
The Camden native was enrolled at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock when one of his longtime best friends and a classmate encouraged him to apply for a position at the startup that at that time had just nine employees. It has hundreds now.
He emailed founder and CEO Jeston George for an interview. Berley showed up in “a full suit and tie and clean-shaven, and the first thing I see is Jeston in coral shorts and a white short-sleeve button-down and flip-flops.” Berley got the job and left college to work behind the scenes and be challenged every day.
“Once I started working here and really seeing the culture that Jeston was wanting to build, it really just solidified me saying, ‘Yeah, I want to help make this company as big as I can,’” he said.
Since then he’s had three main mentors, including that best friend, Josiah Brann, who is the “perfect sounding board” and now works for Discovery Education. The others are Apptegy’s Rasesh Patel, who has helped him think differently, and Casey Mikula, who has coached him in how to be a leader.
