Bahn: ADs Say Search Facing Razorbacks’ Long Will Take Research, Planning And Instinct

ArkansasSports360.com recently visited with four BCS conference athletic directors who were in charge of football coaching searches last season. Each had his own approach, but all of the administrators — Arizona’s Greg Byrne, Illinois’ Mike Thomas, North Carolina’s Bubba Cunningham and Washington State’s Bill Moos — agreed that a football coaching search is as consuming as it gets. There is no overstating the importance of the decision currently facing Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long.

Bahn: David Oku Pays Back Opportunity With Effort For Red Wolves

Running back David Oku has been one of the most consistent offensive threats for Arkansas State so far this season.

David Oku talks like a man who is glad to be back in college football. Watch Oku run and he looks like a guy who is glad to be back in college football. But if you really want to get a sense of how grateful Oku is to be back on the field, Red Wolves’ running backs coach Eliah Drinkwitz says you should see the guy practice.

[VIDEO] Bahn: There’s A Price To Pay For Razorbacks Losing To ULM, How Big Is It?

Losing to a team like Louisiana-Monroe comes with a cost. Arkansas’ hope here is that the losses are limited to dropping out of the AP Top 25 poll and failing to reap the benefits of the marketing value that comes with college football’s most popular pregame show.

Bahn: Spare Blaming Smith Or The Razorbacks, This One’s On Bobby Petrino

Arkansas fired Bobby Petrino in April.

Before you lay ULM 34, Arkansas 31 on Coach John L. Smith and the coaches who got outschemed or the players who got outexecuted and outmanned, turn your attention elsewhere. Look to a house on one of the those Lindsey golf courses in Rogers, perhaps somewhere in Montana. Wherever it is that Bobby Petrino currently sits unemployed and hoping for his next job. Nobody deserves more blame for what happened against the Warhawks.

Tyler Wilson threw a touchdown to Michael Smith (21) on his first series as a college quarterback. Things got more difficult from there for Wilson as he experienced his "Welcome to the SEC" moment.

Razorback players reflect on those early moments in their careers when they realized college football was on a different level than any football they'd played before. These are their "Welcome to the SEC" Moments: read more >
Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson is expected to be one of the top players in the SEC this season.

Bahn: Hogs’ Tyler Wilson Has A Read On Paul Petrino After They Team For Big Spring

Perhaps Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson can’t do his relationship with offensive coordinator Paul Petrino justice with words. His spring practice performance provides as good an explanation as any of how well he and Petrino fit. It’s well documented the sort of spring Wilson had. He threw no interceptions in scrimmages and capped April by completing 31 of 41 passes for 467 yards with two touchdowns in the Red-White game. read more >
ASU Coach Gus Malzahn speaks at the Fordyce Civic Center, delivering one of 15 speeches on a statewide tour that covered more than 1,000 miles this week.

Bahn: Arkansas State’s Malzahn Pitches Vision For Red Wolves In Statewide Speaking Tour

Arkansas State Coach Gus Malzahn made 15 stops in 14 different towns and covered approximately 1,100 miles working to promote the Red Wolves earlier this week. ArkansasSports360.com was with Malzahn for the final day of the trip, which included stops in Bryant, Pine Bluff, El Dorado, Fordyce and Hot Springs. There were few signs of fatigue for the coach throughout Thursday’s final day of the trip. read more >

Bahn: Arrested Razorbacks Have Themselves To Blame, Not Coaches Or The System

So far six Arkansas football players have been arrested this spring, including five allegedly involved in taking property that isn't theirs. They have nobody to blame but themselves. Bobby Petrino, John L. Smith and the NCAA aren't at fault for their stupidity. read more >

Bahn: Minnesota Vikings’ Wright, Childs Just The Latest Receiver Greats From Warren

Don’t bother looking for a Wal-Mart in the south Arkansas town of Warren. To find one of those you have to drive 20 or so miles east to Monticello. Same thing with a local movie theater. Warren doesn’t have one of those either. Know what the South Arkansas town of 6,000 does have? A history of producing great college wide receivers and two of the top 150 draft picks in the recent NFL Draft. Former Arkansas Razorbacks and Warren teammates Jarius Wright and Greg Childs were fourth-round picks by the Minnesota Vikings, further establishing Warren’s tradition as a hotbed for wide receiver talent in Arkansas. read more >

Bahn: John L. Smith’s Quirks, Motivation To Win On Display In Razorback Introduction

John L. Smith's introductory press conference at Arkansas was all the YouTube clips you might have seen of Smith's 19 years as a head coach playing out in real time. Smith didn’t slap himself this time. But he did deliver a death blow to the idea of a head coach that we’ve come to expect here the last four years. read more >

Phone Records Show Frequent Contact Between Bobby Petrino, Jessica Dorrell

Former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino and Jessica Dorrell exchanged thousands of phone calls, text and multimedia messages between September and April 5, including on game days during the 2011 football season. Documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request provided more detail of the inappropriate relationship between the two that ultimately led to Petrino’s firing. Athletic Director Jeff Long said Petrino and Dorrell, hired into the football office on March 28, were together a “significant” amount of time, something the records confirm. read more >

Bahn: Feeling Pain At Arkansas, But Not Necessarily Petrino’s Pain

Regardless of how much pain he was in following the wreck — State Police Captain Lance King says Petrino did nothing but groan on the way to the hospital (well, groan and provide detailed directions on how to get to the little known Physician’s Specialty Hospital)— it’s really hard to muster much sympathy anymore for Petrino. But there are folks that deserve your empathy. None of them are wearing neck braces. All of them have been hurt in ways that aren’t as visible as the road rash on Petrino's face. read more >

Bahn: Opportunity Too Much For Arkansas State, Malzahn To Pass Up

Knowing where Gus Malzahn was a year ago, ASU Athletic Director Dean Lee was still a little stunned that ASU had just landed him as its 28th head coach. Lee’s reaction post-Malzahn press conference was no different than most of the college football following public. Everybody was trying to make sense of how Malzahn wound up at Arkansas State, a school that won the Sun Belt title outright for the first time since joining the league. Could Lee have imagined hiring Malzahn was possible a year ago or, heck, even a week ago? read more >

Bahn: Razorbacks’ Petrino Knows How To Pace An Offense (And How To Get A Laugh)

Teams don't show all they've got in tune-up games. Most folks who pay attention to college football would agree that’s the case. Doesn’t mean Coach Bobby Petrino wants to talk about it. In fact, Petrino did his best to shoot that idea down — with humor! — Thursday when a local TV personality asked about further opening up the playbook in the coming weeks. read more >

Bahn: Freeze Recruiting Plan For ASU Not Easy To Define, But Has Worked Before

Every facet of the Arkansas State football program under first-year Coach Hugh Freeze can seemingly be boiled down into one, succinct mission statement. For example, Freeze has what he labels as an “It” for his offensive, defensive and special teams philosophies. Freeze’s “It” when talking about recruiting? That’s not so simple to define. read more >
