Position Information/Description: To perform various horticulture installation and maintenance activities at the Little Rock Zoo.
Essential Job Functions: Operates hand tools and earth-moving equipment to prepare sites for planting and transplanting of shrubs and small trees; uses shovels, rakes and other hand tools to maintain areas around plants. Installs, maintains, and repairs irrigation and sprinkler systems. Operates power hedge trimmers, blowers, edgers and hand shears to trim plants; sharpens and repairs hand tools. Designs layout of plant beds; determines quantity and amount of plants and materials required.
Plants trees, shrubs and other plant materials; lays sod. Performs greenhouse maintenance activities, including plant germination, cultivation, transplanting, and insect and disease control. Operates tractor-mounted mowers and push mowers to cut grass. Operates a power saw to cut and trim trees. Turns in work requests to supervisor; notifies supervisor of needed supplies and materials. Drives light and heavy duty trucks with trailers to transport equipment and materials and to pick up equipment and supplies. Notifies supervisor of major problems with plant damage and disease and damage to equipment and facilities. Provides working supervision to part-time, temporary, volunteer and work release, community service, re-entry, and juvenile justice personnel. Maintains paper records of job site materials, equipment usage, and hours worked; compiles and submits reports based on records. Maintains paper logbooks by handwriting log entries documenting the use of chemical agents. Operates a City pool automobile in the performance of essential job functions.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides working supervision to part-time, temporary, volunteer and work release, community service, re-entry, and juvenile justice personnel.
Minimum Qualifications and Additional Requirements:
These knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually, although not always, acquired through completion of high school, two (2) years of experience in a commercial greenhouse, nursery sales, landscaping, lawn service, or a related area, one (1) year of lead worker experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
