Fiber Design Technician

To produce design maps for fiber construction and utilize fiber management software to manage and communicate splicing and connectivity. Produce versioned construction maps along with bill of materials and splicing diagrams for construction personnel and contractors. Maintain the geographical information system (GIS) to ensure that the electrical and fiber system drawing and model, the associated database and connectivity, and the geographical background are accurate and current. Produce maps, diagrams, drawings, and reports as needed using GIS and other related software or systems. Provide assistance to construction crews working in the field to interpret construction maps and splicing diagrams.


Reports to: Outside Plant Manager


Updates and makes corrections to the GIS to reflect any changes made to the electrical and fiber system relating to new construction and plant changes.
Updates and makes changes to the GIS system to reflect accurate and current geographical and land base information including but not limited to highways, roads, lakes, rivers, creeks, wetlands, city limits, town limits, district lines, tax districts, service territories, easements, Board districts, property lines, and developments.
Performs all work required of the GIS area to ensure that information relating to the service order and work order processes is properly entered into the GIS and accounting and information systems.
Imports and exports data to and from the GIS to facilitate the sharing of information with the county governments, cities and towns, developers, police departments, fire departments and other utilities as needed.
Performs field inspections on overhead and underground lines and equipment to verify the accuracy of the GIS, updates the system accordingly, and reports discrepancies or hazardous conditions as needed to the appropriate personnel.
Operates Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment in field to attach real-world coordinates to the associated location in the GIS; Imports this data and makes adjustments as needed.
Uses the GIS to maintain all pertinent size, type, assembly, configuration, joint use, and maintenance data on electrical distribution system poles, lines, and equipment and generates related reports as needed.
Inspects and field checks completed work orders to assure compliance with applicable specifications, accurate material charges, and quality workmanship.
Analyzes statistical outage and submits recommendations regarding necessary corrective action to meet reliability standards.
Supports the Mission Statement and Core Values of the Cooperative at all times.
Preserves confidentiality of Cooperative issues when relating to staff, consumer/members, and general public.
Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

The Fiber Design Technician shall be required to perform any other duties assigned in order to fulfill the objectives of OzarksGo.


Regular contacts with patrons, either within the office or in the field. May also involve occasional self-initiated contacts to patrons. Lack of tact and judgment may result in a limited type of problem for the organization.
Contacts with other departments or offices and also frequently with individuals in middle level positions; consulting on problems which necessitate judgment and tact in presentation to obtain cooperation or approval of action to be taken. Also, important contacts with associates as required in advanced supervisory jobs.


Education, Job knowledge and Training: High school or GED, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area, e.g. data processing, clerical/administrative, equipment operation, etc., plus 3 years related experience and/or training. Or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be familiar with fiber optics design and architectures including splitter and connectivity models. General knowledge of electric overhead and underground plant is beneficial. Extensive knowledge of GIS applications and geodatabases is required. Must have the ability to trace fiber optics connectivity through multiple splice and splitter locations. Must have the ability to read and follow maps.

Equipment Operated: Must be able to operate all equipment normally found in an office environment. Must have valid driver's license without violation, which would prohibit insurability.

Abilities and Skills: Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Must be able to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Capability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Must be able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram formats.

Physical Effort: Will require extended periods of sitting and use of a keyboard and computer. Semi-repetitive, low physical. Semi-repetitive type work which requires periods of concentration for varied time cycles as prescribed by the tasks. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision; distance vision; color vision; peripheral vision; depth perception; and ability to adjust focus.

Working Conditions: Normal office conditions, some irregular hours may be required.
