Jan Cottingham is from western Arkansas and is a graduate of Hendrix College in Conway. She's always wanted to be a journalist and pretty much always has been, with one detour into the nonprofit world: editing Heifer International's magazine and serving as communications liaison for Nobel Peace Prize-winner Wangari Maathai of Kenya.

Cottingham began her career at the Arkansas Democrat and was the last city editor of the Arkansas Gazette. She was also metro editor at the Dallas Morning News. Her Influences? Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Penn Warren.
