Monk Exits Democrat-Gazette

2 min read

Ginny Monk has left the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette after four years of award-winning work as an investigative reporter.

Aug. 2 was her last day at the paper, her only workplace since her 2017 graduation from the University of Arkansas, where she was editor in chief of the Arkansas Traveler.

Monk won the Arkansas Press Association’s 2020 Freedom of Information Award last month for her “Children in Peril” series, which relied on data obtained through the state’s open records law to tell the story of how children die in Arkansas, including a high number of gun deaths.

Monk, who grew up near Mount Ida, said on social media that she was leaving her beloved home state to join her fiance, John Moritz, in Connecticut. Moritz, who spent five years as the Democrat-Gazette’s statehouse reporter, left the paper in April to cover local government and politics for the Hearst Connecticut Media Group.

“I’ll be moving to Connecticut in a few days to join my dear fiancé and am so excited to explore my new state,” Monk posted on Twitter. “But Arkansas, you’ll always be my home. I just adore ya.”

Monk said she was staying in journalism, and promised to keep followers informed on her next job. “I really believe that journalism is an act of caring. I hope that’s something that’s come through in my work,” she wrote, adding that transparency and public accountability are essential in governance.
