Busy Club Offers Positive Activities for Benton County Kids

The Boys & Girls Club of Benton County offers services to all the youths of the Bentonville area, but particularly to those from a disadvantaged background.

Youths ages 6-18 can take advantage of after-school programs such as homework assistance, computer technology, arts and crafts, ceramic projects, games and tournaments, safety programs and leadership clubs. In addition, 1,288 boys participated last year in fall baseball, football and basketball. More than 300 girls took part in the club’s volleyball and basketball programs.

Smart Moves is a substance-abuse prevention program that teaches pregnancy prevention and ways to resist alcohol and drugs.

The club’s two locations are open 3-9 p.m. during the school year and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in the summer. The club is securing sites for two larger units in the area, with a five-year plan under development.

The community is welcome to visit the club, but the organization doesn’t just leave it at that. Along with encouraging the local media to attend events, the club publishes quarterly newsletters, annual reports and monthly calendars.

“Through the Boys & Girls Club of America’s Commitment to Quality program, the Boys & Girls Club of Benton County strives to provide high-quality programs that help children develop the skills they need to become strong, positive adults,” said executive director Tom Hough.

The strong economy in the area has fueled the club’s growth through corporate donations, but the organization is working to increase its individual funding base. To this end, it has established the Boys & Girls Club of Benton County Foundation to honor donors.
